Any Ideas For Lowering Our Lp Gas Bill?

Posted on | January 10, 2010 | 6 Comments

We have a lp boiler and our bill this winter was really high. We also have one gas water heater, that feeds three bathrooms and we’re thinking about going tankless with that, but we don’t want to loose water pressure in the shower. I read that could be a problem. Is that true? We have a electric water heater in the laundryroom for it and the kitchen. Should we go tankless with that too? Which will save us more energy in the long run, gas or electric. I know the cost up front is a lot, but will it really make a difference in my utility bills? I read the tankless uses more power for a shorter amount of time and will make little difference. We’re also thinking about finding a way to heat the water before it goes into the boiler. Maybe getting a pellet stove over by the boiler. I like the idea of alternative heat anyhow, but we have to watch the cost. We can’t afford to do every idea that comes along. We live in Michigan. Our lp gas bill is really putting the pinch on us. Any ideas?

You may want to avoid going tankless for the whole house. I’m curious why you have both an electric and gas waterheater. You may want to go tankless at the laundry and kitchen…that way you are only heating water when you actually use them and it is point-of-use. Get an insulation blanket for the gas water heater, it’s not that expensive. Adding a Pellet Stove or Wood-Burning Stove of the right size to warm your home will make a significant difference because you can make that the primary heating for the house and limit the use of LP…besides, 68 is not reasonable! A programmable thermostat would allow you to fine tune heating to when folks are actually in the house such as evenings for dinner or mid-day for weekends. Pellet / Wood-Burning Stove will probably provide more bang for the buck.

Turn off the electric water heater to the laundry room its costing you about $90.00 /month. It runs 24/7 and drives up the bill. Use the breaker box switch to kill the power till you want to wash with hot water. Turn the breaker on when you need and in 10 min your set.
Now about the Gas hot water heater set it to the coolest setting you can stand for showers and thats about the best you can do for that.
The boiler is the worst offender because it uses large amounts of gas and electric to heat water and run a pump.
make sure the burner is clean and the flame looks blue not yellow. A yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion and that means your not getting the most heat from he flame because the burner is dirty or the air inlet is not properly adjusted. Set back thermostat will save you money by keeping the unit off or at a lower temp when at work or sleeping.
    Good luck!

Actually, tankless is the way to go if a solar water heater is not feasable. The newer ones are VERY effecient, have good pressure, and come in both gas and electric. The electric ones are a small problem to install as they require 3 240V circuits to power. The short answer is that as they heat the water on demand, they DO save energy in the long run. That being said, I personally like a solar water heater with electric backup best.

before spending money trying to save money check for serious cold air leaks coming into house, basement windows can be sealed off with pieces of foam and caulk, outlets can leak lots of air place tape over unused ones, check under sinks and around pipes by waterheaters. Insulate all recirculating water pipes in boiler system. Inexpensive window films are good for even newer windows. Usually when you have a high heating bill you can follow the cold air to the source.
