Are Tankless Water Heaters Ok In Northern Climes? Can Someone Attest To Their Performance In Chicago?

Posted on | November 28, 2009 | 4 Comments

I am looking to replace a 40 gallon gas water heater (tank) and I was either going to go with a 70 gallon tank or try a whole house tankless. I have read that the ground water temperature affects their performance and was wondering if anyone in Chicago has installed a whole house tankless and what their experience has been. Would you caution against or recommend?

The temperature of ground water will merely effect the units efficiency. It will not effect its operation. Ground temperatures, below a frost line, are fairly constant (reliably predictable).
However, the general rule of thumb is that (Monthly) for every 4 degrees your region averages below 32 degrees, reduce the efficiency rating on the unit by approximately 1.25%. and you will have a far more reliable understanding when comparing units for purchase and use..

I would call a contractor that installs them and ask him for a couple references so that you can talk to people in chicago who have this type of system. they are expensive and you don’t want to spend themoney on something that doesn’t work. i would also read the fine print in the warrenty. Make sure everything is covered

it doesn’t matter where its installed,it will do the same job in chicago or in miami,it is all about what your looking for and what you expect from a water heater, they do just what the say they will do,i think they are great when run along with a conventional water heater,we use them for apt. bldg. and they service up to 4 apt. along with a tank type ,if they were used only for a single family they would be good in my opinion and shouldn’t have any trouble servicing a family

They are fine in cold climates, We have one in our Canadian Home, it gets too about 15% in the winter and it works fine, plenty of hot water.
