    There are different types of vented gas water heaters. You should follow the manufactures instructions for your particular heater. If you don’t have the instructions that should come with the heater. Go to the web site for the manufacturer and download it.

    read proper directions but! u can still have problem: a tight house with exhaust fans running { kitchen, bath] can create a vaccuumn which will downdraft the chimney & pull exhaust into room.
    after install, close house tight & turn on all exhaust vents. hold a candle near the opening above the heater & see if flame gets pulled into flue & is still exhausting.
