Ballpark Cost For Tankless Waterheater Installation In Houston, Tx?

Posted on | January 11, 2010 | 4 Comments

we already have 3/4″ gas and water lines on that wall and a vent from the tank waterheater we want to replace. i’d like an idea of cost for everything except the heater itself, i’ve got an idea on the cost of that. also, how about the cost for the permit? (one plumber told us it was $150 and i think he was lying)
thanks!

Don’t know installation costs for your area, but do want to point out that you will have to replace the entire vent system for a gas tankless. I was going to replace mine, but balked at having to replace the whole vent pipe from the utility closet through the ceiling and through the roof. The burner in a tankless is very powerful, puts out a lot more heat and combustion products, so it requires by code a larger vent pipe. So that means cutting larger holes in you ceiling and in the roof and including a new vent cover on the roof to accomodate the larger pipe. Thought I would mention that, as I was going to do my own installation, but the pipe costs were over $100 at Lowes for a full replacement. Plus my family wanted hot water TODAY, and with my projects, it was probably a 2 day job. So a tankless installation in new construction is fairly easy, in existing homes, there is more work involved than replacing a regular tank heater.

a tankless water heater has to be install by a pro. due to the location and the 220 electricall it needs to operate and also a pro . plumber. so you have to look at the cost of the tankless unit and the cost of having a plumber and a electrcion plus parts n labor

I’m in Los Angeles and it cost me $1500 for the heater and the labor including permits. The cost of the permit really depends on the city, you would have to call them and find out. $150 bucks sounds REALLY cheap for a job! However if $150 is for the permit, that doesn’t sound too bad.
