Considering Installing A Tankless, Gas Water Heater System And Underfloor Heating–any Experience With This?
Posted on | November 18, 2009 | 6 Comments
We have an area to heat an a-frame which is approximately 750 sq feet. It will have to support one full bathroom and one guest bathroom as well as an apartment size clothes washer and a kitchen with hot water.
Though these tankless systems are very efficient and all over Europe, they are quite uncommon in the US. Are there problems or is it just that the initial cash outlay is considerably higher?

hi I live in the Uk I had what you call a tank less system for 20 years [combi boiler] is now a condensing a boiler.
there are the most efficient way of heating water the advantages are you don,t store water other than what is in you radiator system the only disadvantage I have found is it takes a few moments longer for domestic hot water to start flowing as you are not storing hot water. Finally the boiler its self needs very little maintenance but it is expensive to install

Combi boilers were designed for apartments and small houses, where all the taps and showers are close together. If this fits your circumstances then yes, a combi is for you.
However if you have long distances between where the boiler is to be sited or a large property they are not ideally suited for you. Manufactures will tell you the same thing regardless what a plumber might say. Plumbers often install them where they are not suitable because it suits them.
Although the hot water supply from them can be disappointingly poor (try running a bath, the water trickles out), the heating side is excellent.
Underfloor heating is more suitable for large rooms where a lot of radiators would look ugly, or there really is no place to put enough radiators. It is very slow to heat up (because it has to heat up the floor) therefore it needs to be on a low setting almost 24 hours a day. If your rooms are standard sizes then I would go for radiators because they are easier to control and are more responsive

Depending upon your area it can cost from 3500 to 5000 to install a tankless water heater. The cost is associated with the venting of the unit to the outside. You must mount them on an outside wall. You also must move the electricity to it from where it is located to connect your current water heater. Most people decide to replace what they have already.

Combination boilers we call them and they work on the same principle as a caravan water heater. The boiler only ignites when you turn the tap on and the water pressure is released so you dont waste money heating water that you dont use. With the central heating side the boiler is ignited for a length of time the same as a conventional heating system.I have had one and never had any trouble with it

They are more expensive but,not as much as the 1st person said.I think most are gas some are electric and only turn on when you use water. They have different ratings for more or less hot water.A small apt or house should be fine as long as everyone does not shower,do dishes, laundry all at once.
