Do Tankless Electric Water Heaters Save Energy?

I had two at work once. They do save energy because they do not have to keep the whole tank warm all the time. However, they do not heat the water very hot typically.

Of course. It heats water on demand instead of a conventional water heater that has to continually heat water in a tank, which wastes energy. Tankless wh’rs don’t have to do that, so they save energy.

I have a tankless Oil water heater (Monitor) It absolutely WILL be cheaper. A tankless heater doesn’t have to set idle all night and keep turning on to keep the water in thew tank warm (wasted energy. With a tankless, (Oil, Gas, or even electric) The water only heats when you turn the hot water on. Because of its catalytic properties, it produces almost “instant” hot water (except for whats standing in the line) You don’t have to worry about running out of hot water, and when you cut it off, it stops heating. Mine paid for itself in energy savings the 1st year I had it installed.

no doubt they save energy, but don’t forget the wiring. some of them take three 40 Amp. circuits do your homework before you by.

Absolutely, but for the payback period, you will not save any money. Do it for the environment? Then again, how much more landfill before they come up with a final solution?
Keep in mind: if you have a winter season, the heat loss from the tank will only go into your house which you are heating anyway, so its not a loss. In summer, your AC may have to dispose of this heat loss.
In winter, I crank ours up (helps keep the basement warm), in summer I turn it to ‘Vacation’ since we don’t need as much anyway–problem solved!

Yes. Tankless waterheaters heat water only when you need hot water. A standard waterheater heats and stores water. This means that 24/7 the heater re-heats the water in the tank as it cools. Insulating the tank helps, as does installing a timer to turn the heater off when no more hot water will be needed, and turning it on a couple hours before you need hot water. Tankless heaters do require maintenance though. They need to be cleaned once a year.
