Do You Have A Tankless Water Heater? If So, Do You Like It, Or Was Your Old-fashioned One Better?

I’m considering installing a tankless water heater, but I’m a little afraid of making the jump. If you install one of these and then decide you don’t like it, there’s not much recourse. You couldn’t take it back to the store; you could only replace it with a “tanked” water heater. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who would be willing to share their experience/advice regarding owning/using a tankless water heater.

If you heat water with electric, forget the tankless, electric tankless water heaters don’t work as advertised.
If you use gas, then go for it. Gas heaters work very well.
If you have water that is hard, or has lots of sediment, you will need to add a filter and softener to your system. Tankless heaters don’t have anywhere for sediment to collect, so it ends up in your faucet screens.

I have installed a few of them, and my customers seem happy with them. The most common complaint I hear about them is that the water is never as hot as it used to be. Not really a problem, just something to get used to. You would end up mixing in less cold water. You will have to be prepared to shell out big dough for one of these units, maybe up to triple the cost of a storage water heater. But over time you will make up the cost because your not paying to maintain 50 gal. of water at 120 deg. Also, tankless units are designed to last 20 years or so, where as a tank’s average life is only 8-10 years. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about a tank rupturing and flooding your basement. Hope this helps you make your decision.

I work with plumbers who don’t recommend them, they say instant endless water is a myth. I have not seen one work correctly and the one featured on “This Old House” had 2 tanks hooked in series in the basement.
All advertisement says endless hot water but if you think about it, what kind of element or dead short do you have to create to do that. I’d search more, I personally have found no one who tells me they are endless.

you have tell people if it would be elec. or gas. also, how much hot water you use. also, why you want it? do need more hot water than you get now? or do think it will save you money? the only time i showered with one the water kept getting cool and warm in cycles while i showered. If you have hard water, scale will build up in the heating tubes and disable it. So, the question is to you ,,why do want one?. that should be part of your question to get good answers.

Tough question Bill. I personally enjoy my tank less. However, if you are debating purchasing one, do your homework and make sure that you obtain a CERTIFIED plumber that has worked with tank less heaters and knows how to size them correctly. Cost is a lot higher but it frees up more space in the basement. Good luck.
