Does A Tankless Water Heater Detect Water Flow Or Temperature Change To Start Heating The Water?

The ones that I’m aware of sense the flow of water. There’s an in-line flow detector in Noritz tankless water heaters – a little device that spins (when water passes by) – it has a small embedded magnet.
