I’m ready for a new water heater and I’m considering a tankless water heater. How expensive are they and do you think they are worth it. I’m considering because I just finished my basement and Don’t want water damage down there because of a broken tank plus I would like to free up some space.

I checked into one a few years ago when I built my house and they were about $650 installed. The only problem with them is that while they are an endless supply of hot water, they will run “cool” if you try to run too much water through it too fast. In other words, you really can’t turn the water on full force in several areas at once. But, that is really only an issue if you are trying to run two showers and fill the washer at the same time, which I don’t think you are doing.
I eventually decided against it as I wanted to do upgrades in other areas of the house at the time and figured I’d upgrade the water heater when it kicked the bucket. I also read some horror stories about them exploding, but a regular hot water heater can explode, too. So, I wouldn’t be too concerned with that.
Worth it? Yes, especially when you consider what you save by not reheating the same water over and over and over again.

do not get one. they are better in areas that have good water you need to have your water tested to check its hardness. most manufactures will not warranty a tankless without it being on a water softner. the only one that will is rinnai there about 1200.00 just to buy the heater and i’ve seen those clog up within 1 week without a softner. you have to vent in stainless steel or aluminum concentric vents which can be costly. the electric ones are being pulled off the market. they use up to 180 amps you need 3 60 amp breakers just for the heater and the clog up quickly. all the tankless water heaters need regular maintenance have to back flush them with vinegar or clr. and there are a lot of components crammed into a small space a technician nightmare….better pray nothing goes wrong or be prepared to pay a fortion to have it repaired. ive installed a few of them and ive uninstalled many of them people hate them and end up going back to a tank water heater

If you can get one installed for $400 or $600, jump on it. Around here the absolute best I can do – if everything is perfect – is around $2500. The heater itself is a grand. They require a large gas supply (they need a lot of gas RIGHT NOW) and the venting is stainless steel (they’re condensing, so you can’t use the old vent) which is not cheap either.
Never running out of hot water is nice, though. There may still be tax rebates available to mitigate the cost. And, what’s a square foot of real estate worth where you live?
Note: If you’re thinking of getting an electric one, look at the electrical requirements. There are few, if any, residential electrical service panels that will support one.

About $400. get a water softener it prolongs the life of water heaters. here is fairly accurate data, http://www.palomatankless.com/technology…

just get a good tank heater so you dont have to deal with problems of one of those. also , only the gas ones work well.
