Electric Or Gas?
Posted on | January 9, 2010 | 8 Comments
I want to k now if it is cheaper to run an electric dryer or a gas dryer? My propane bill is so high, I am looking for a way to reduce the cost. I also need a new water heater, and am looking for something better, and economic. I need to soften my water, which is why I need a new one in the first place. The water heater got so full of lime buildup that the water pressure blew out the pressure valve, and will keep on blowing it until I resolve the problem of the lime. Should I go tankless for water heater? Any suggestions would be great!

Until you ‘soften your water’ and fix the lime buildup problem I would not use a tank-less system,as this type of heater will fail quicker using water with a high lime content than a traditional water heater.

It is cheaper to run a gas dryer. Installing a whole house water filter will protect everything after it, just gives that extra protection and is cheap.

without knowing what part of the country you are in,its hard to say gas is best and quickest.

Ten years ago, I would have said gas but as gas prices (LPG/propane) have risen, so too has the cost of electricity.
Today, I’d say it was a crapshoot… a situation where you are going to pay through the nose either way. This being the case, I’d go with electric simply because they are marginally safer.
(assuming by ‘tankless’, you mean the newer electric models that use coiled valves instead of a tank)

It will depend on where you live. In every place (several states) I’ve had a home, gas was always cheaper than electric – sometimes amazingly so. I think that those “on demand” water heaters are great, as the water is heated as it’s called for. I’ve never seen one that’s not electric, though. That could run the cost up to the point that it might be as cheap to get a standard tank heater run on gas and insulate it well.

there are advantages and disadvantages to both electric and gas….i prefer gas water heaters and dryers (but i work for a gas company so i may be bias). I do know this from my own experience, there is not that much difference in the cost of operation of electric and gas water heaters, but there is a lot of difference in how efficiently they work……the gas one will heat water faster and hotter than the electric…..on the other hand if you get all electric appliances you can completely do away with you gas bill…..money wise there’s probably not $50 difference a year either way it’s just whichever you prefer….good luck with your decision

all good answers, filter before softener – theory says the electric provider wil use the cheapest fuel, but electric is still higher than gas ( in my area provider uses coal- cheapest fuel ) I prefere gas, to heat & dry & cook. there is a complicated conversion to compair, but I don’t know what it is. you can shop l/p prices from several suppliers when the price drops.

It depends on the cost of the gas and the electric. Gas is going up, making electric a better deal than it used to be. But the global warming hoax is going to drive up the cost of electricity in the next few years. So it’s kind of a toss up right now. In my area, propane is still cheaper than electric. Any new water heater will be more efficient due to better insulation. Tankless heaters lime up just as quick. If it was me, I would go gas on both.
