Electric Water Heater Question?

Posted on | December 9, 2009 | 2 Comments

We are looking into buying a new electric water heater. We are a family of 5. We were looking for any input on tank vs. tankless. We would love the extra space made by getting rid of the tank style water heater BUT we are unsure if the tankless could hold up to 3 soon to be teenagers and the showers, dishes, & laundry.
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks!

You’re concerns are quite accurate. A tankless water heater may lag behind with such a large family, plus your other utilities using hot water. The only way you could balance this would be the “one at a time” rule. Stay with a tank (50 gal). Also, if you can, switch to natural gas. The elements in an electric water heater draw a lot of power.

Tankless water heaters cost about 3 times tank type ones do. I would opt for a good energy efficient 50 gal water heater.
