Hot water heater-gas: Can anyone help me understand how to start the water flow to empty the tank by hose?
Posted on | April 20, 2010 | 5 Comments
The temp/pressure valve continues to leak badly, but I know the tank is full and needs to have the water flushed in order to release pressure. When I hook up the hose nothing happens. Am I missing a valve release or should I have the water lines opened/closed ? I don’t have the money to replace the heater or hire a plumber. I would appreciate any help. Than you!

1st shut off water comming into the tank. Open hot water at the sinks. On top of the tank is a pressure relief valve..open it by lifting the little arm up. Your tank will now drain. To flush the tank..close the hot water on the sinks and open the water to the tank and let it run for a few min. Close the pressure valve and fill the tank. Job done

where you hook the hose up there should be a knob right on top where you turn to the left to open up the valve. make sure your hose is low so you can let gravity do its job.

Hook the hose, stop the supply water line, open the drain valve, open one or more hat water faucets.
It will take 1/2 to 1 hour for the heater to drain.
When you are ready to fill it up, close the drain valve, open the supply water valve, leave some hot water faucets open, when water stars to run out of them, you can close them, your heater is full.
Have fun!

The answer to your question is to vent the heater by opening faucets above the heater, however it is possible that your drain valve is clogged with sediment and needs to be unclogged, use a wire hanger to dislodge the sediment. Be sure that you are shutting off the cold water going into the tank, not the hot water going out. A more important question is; why is your t/p valve leaking, is it letting off excess pressure, or is it worn out, or is it also clogged with sediment. Try opening and closing the t/p valve several times to clear it; if the leak doesn’t slow; and Most Important, if the pressure and temperature are not excessive, then you can replace the t/p valve. Any’ how to’ online will give the details. Whatever you do NEVER try to cap off the valve, this would create a dangerous condition. Good Luck.
