how can i turn off my water heater?

Posted on | May 1, 2010 | 5 Comments

i have a residential electric water heater and i’m getting frustrated not finding a On/Off switch for the heater. i just need to change my temperture and everywhere it’s stating i need to turn off the heater before changing tempeture but i don’t see how to turn it off and i can’t seem to find anything about on/off in the manual. am i missing something? is there another way to turn it off besides a button i don’t know about? it doesn’t say to turn off water. it says to turn of water heater? WERE IS IT?!! Help?

Turn off the 220 breaker first, breaker panel

Check your breaker box. The hot water heater will have it’s own breaker.

To adjust the temp of your electric hot water heater setting, just turn the gauge lower on the temp setting dial..or if you actually want to turn off the entire hot water tank I suggest you use the fuse panel in your home to cut all power to the hot water heater-just make sure you actually turn off the right breaker.

Turn off the power at the breaker, then disconnect the wires from the source. (if you are doing major work)

There should be a breaker soley for the water heater. Flick that breaker and then change the temp.
