How do I stop a leak in the water heater?
Posted on | May 12, 2010 | 6 Comments
My water heater was working perfectly fine until I turned off the water supply to the house. When I turned the water supply back on, the water heater was leaking tremendously; not just a little leak, but a constant flood of water that was almost flooding my backyard. I turned off the water flow to the water heater, but how can I fix the leak?

Unless it is a leak at the pop-off valve or a pipe fitting, you probably won’t be able to repair it. Repairing te tank itself is not really feasible. You’ll probably have to replace the unit.

You dont. When ever you turn water back on do it very slowly. Rushing water can cause a lot of damage.

Unless it is leaking from the valve at the bottom of the tank it’s time to buy a new water heater.

you might not need a new heater… if it is running out of the overflow pipe then it could either need a new relief valve or it may have a hole in the coil in inside, get a plumber to look at it he will test it and let you know the outcome

Don’t panic. If the problem wasn’t there before, it is likely the pressure relief valve. Check the location of the leak. If it is coming from a Drain pipe connected to the pressure relief valve, it is just a matter of replacing the valve. Easy and not expensive. You may be able to do it yourself.
