How do I temporarily repair water heater leak?

Posted on | December 12, 2011 | 5 Comments

The water heater is clearly leaking from the bottom and seeping onto the boxy thing it sits on. I tried turning off the water supply by turning the valve at the top (which i think is for the water supply) clockwise but nothing changed. How to stop the leak before it gets too bad? Also, should I have turned off the gas too?

you need to call a repair man right away, if you have a leak, even if its a small one it can turn into a nightmare overnight.

you need to shut the water off and drain the water from it . by turning the hot water on some were in your home then open the drain Valve on the water heat not the pressure Valve tho.. maybe you could weld it or something. I don’t know. other than that i guess by a new one

It is finally rusting out and time to replace it…The reason it keeps leaking when you turn the valve off is it has 30/40/or 50 gallons of water stored in it and it will continue to leak untill it has all drained out..I would turn my gas off for once the water is drained it will keep burning..and no you cannot weld it as suggested..this would cost more than a new water heater..you would have to pull the outer tin covering off of it..then remove all the insulation..then try to weld..which will not be successful..and if the weld was succesful…your gas flame from the thermostat would be coming on every ten minutes for there will be no insulaton left on it to keep the water warm long..one month of trying to heat wter on this altered heater will cost more to operate also than buying a new one…

There are no temp fixes. The heater could burst at any time and spill 50 gal.of water out all at once.Turn off the gas. Close the inlet valve to the heater.Drain the unit. Have ti replaced ASAP
