How Loud Is A Noritz Tankless Water Heater?

Posted on | November 24, 2009 | 7 Comments

My plumber has warned me that the motor on the Noritz tankless water heater makes a noise when it’s running. Can anyone compare the volume to a common household item? Is it similar to the fan on a computer? An electric can opener? I’m not super-sensitive to noise, but I don’t want it to sound like we’re drilling for oil every time someone washes their hands.
Thanks in advance.

I don’t think that a Nortiz TWH has a motor in it.
They aren’t all that loud, perhaps slightly louder than a regular water heater – they have a larger burner.
Call Noritz & ask them (866-766-7489). I would guess that whatever they tell you will be on the low side, but not too far off.

The can opener is about right. Most of the sound is the fan starting followed by the gas burner. Hardly noticeable.

They are not very loud but if you are that picky stick with the regular water heater.

Mine is in the garage and I’ve never heard it make any noise whatsoever.

We installed ours in our attic (third floor of the house) and there IS a noticable noise that might be compared to a can opener, but at 3 a.m. it can be one annoying can opener. It makes a series of several long beeping/mechanical noises when it starts up (even when there is no hot water running for some reason) intermittently, which I noticed the first night we installed it. I was sleeping upstairs right under the unit (which is a livingroom, but I was staying up with a sick child that night) and it woke me up with every beep.

Luckily, I normally don’t sleep in that room and under normal circumstances, it’s not a big deal. But no one told me about this noise and if I had installed this unit over or near a bedroom, it would have been annoying indeed.

The noise Kim refers to is a “hooting” noise caused by the operation of the servo motor adjusting itself to the flow requirements. We are going through several methods to eliminate this but have not been successful yet. Apparently there is either a new circuit board that helps with this, or a dip switch setting on the existing board.

The “hooting” or servo sounds my Noritz makes are driving me nuts. I would not install this again anywhere within earshot. Nothing in their literature describes such sounds, which their Customer Service techs assure me are “completely normal servo sounds”. Their manual says it only makes “fan and motor” sounds, nothing that would describe the constant tones every time the hot water is turned on. It’s a deal-braker for me. I may have to replace it. What I want to know is is it only Noritz that makes these noises???
