How much does a tankless water heater cost?

We are interested in an energy star heater. How much does it cost to have one installed. We want the cheapest energy star unit.

It depends on the size–look in Home Depot–they have them-and brochures. They can also get a Contractor out to you to do an estimate.

The tankless water heater itself may not be that expensive, but you will need a 220 volt wire ran to it (if its an electric one) from your outside power box. Just be sure you know what you’re doing.

in today’s market if you have it installed you are looking at $1500.00+ if you do your own plumbing and installation you might get by at around 1000-1200. that is roughly a 15 year pay off to break even. it is a sound investment in the future and a wise choice if you can afford the initial high cost. tmm a from scratch standard water heater will be at least $600.oo tmm

I would suggest that you *don’t* want the cheapest unit. They can be problematic, especially if not installed correctly. I would stick with either Noritz, Rinnai, or Takagi (if you’re thinking electric, I would forget it altogether).
Tankless water heater have very high gas and electric requirements. They want a LOT of either RIGHT NOW. A gas tankless water heater will not work correctly if the gas supply is inadequate & an electric unit has a huge electrical demand (more than most residential panels will support).
There are also venting requirements that are not met by existing venting (if gas). Tankless water heaters are condensing and need a stainless steel vent (very pricey).
Tankless water heaters are a very good idea with a big up-front price tag.

Avoid the cheap units. They are cheap for a reason. Check the GPM (gallons per minute) rating. Many of these are rated from 1.5 to 4.0 GPM. If you have more than 1 bath these will not give the flow needed.
I recommend the Noritz and Rinnai models. Either of these if sized properly will give you all the hot water that you need.
The electric units need at least 3-60 amp dedicated circuits run to them. This takes a 200 amp panel just for the heater.
Many times they require a meter and service upgrade. Be sure to figure in $$$$ for this.
When you have a gas unit installed make absolutely sure that the gas line is sized properly. Minimun 3/4″.
Living in Florida you will be able to use an outdoor model saving the cost of the venting.
The costs for the heaters can run fron $900 – $2000.
Installation can run from $300 up depending on the necessary work.

Idk how much it costs. My hus said it would be wonderful to have, but we can’t invest that kind of money now. He also said that once we had one installed, we would save lots of money for the rest of our lives. So Sam thinks you ought to do it if you can.
