I Am Thinking About Putting A Tankless Water Heater In My House. Is This A Good Idea, And Ok To Do?
Posted on | November 28, 2009 | 6 Comments
Hi, I live in a condo and my current water heater is 5 gallons or smaller. It runs out of hot water within 3 mins of a shower. The water heater is located in the house in a storage closet. The space i have available for a new water heater is Approximately 28″wide X 40″Tall.
I am debating getting a Tankless water heater, to save space and have an endless supply of hot water. Can anyone give me some advise on this? Or should i just try to fit like a 20-30 gallon electric water heater. No Gas outlet, all electric.
Can you put a tankless heater in a closet like that?
Will it overheat?
Are there laws against this?
I was thinking about getting this one through costco – http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11327101&search=water%20heater&Mo=1&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=water%20heater&Ntt=water%20heater&No=0&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1
Please give me any helpful info on what you think i should do. I don’t know anything when it comes to think kind of stuff.
Thanks!

You most likely have a 30 Amp drop for the electric water heater. Tankless electric water heaters can take from 120 to 180 amps depending on the flow load (1 or 2 bath home). Chances are your electric service isn’t heavy enough to support this.

Rottendo is correct….you’re current elec system probably can’t support the load that an electric tankless heater would require. Gas tankless is FAR superior to electric, but you don’t have that option unfortunately. You should be able to get a “lowboy” 40 gal electric in that space, which would certainly be an improvement over what you have now.

Tankless water heaters cost a bit more in the beginning, but in the long run they do pay for them selves. They take up much less space than a conventional water heater and can be used as a replacement for them. I have had one for 2 years now with no problems at all. I am very glad that we made the switch.

Sounds like a great idea, at least if you own the condo. If you rent, it might be a good thing for the landlord, too. I only improve stuff if it’s mine, but not having enough hot water is definitely a pain!

If you can afford to buy it then I say YES, get one. They only heat the water on demand. There is no hot water storage. So you won’t have a problem with it getting to hot in that closet.

From what I have heard ,they cost considerably more to purchase and install, but consume less energy . As far as where it is allowable to install,Suggest you contact the building inspector in your area,or someone that know the codes and guidelines.Another issue may be power supply,ie is the present power supply edequate for this change. The person you contact regarding (as per code)should be able to give you all the requirement info before you proceed.
