Question by jim B: I have a gas water heater that wont keep water hot?
I have a 70 gallon gas(propane) water heater that runs out of water after one ten minute shower. I tried flushing it and that helped a little any suggestions. To help fix the problem. Also the water heater is only 4 years old.

At the bottom of the heater, there is a red dial about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Turn it to the right to the desired temperature level. If that doesn’t work, call the gas company and have them check the propane line. It may have been crimped somewhere and won’t let the proper amount of gas thru.

try turning up the heat to the next setting. did this heater just start doing this ? if it has been like this since new you could have the cold water inlet and the hot water outlet lines reversed

It could be a couple things. You could just try turning the t-stat on the water heater up, or there could be a problem with your gas valve/ burner assy (I might need to be cleaned), the thermocouple could need replacing. If the water heater is only 4 years old it should still be under warranty. You could call a company to look at it and they might be able to fix it for you. Something else you could do is call the manufacturer and see if it is something that is a common problem with that heater (make sure to have the heater model and serial # ready).

Turn it up hotter on the thermostat. Directions are printed clearly on the side of how to do this. There is also directions on how to light ithe heater in the event it would lose power ot lose the pilot flame (if it has one)

one other thing to check is the dip tube. this is located on the cold side connection. the dip tube is a plastic tube that is connected to the cold side nipple sticking out of the take. this tube ensures that the cold water goes to the bottom of the tank and that when you draw water you are getting the hot water from the top of the tank. if this dip tube breaks or has a crack you will only have about 10 minutes of hot water as the cold would be mixing with the hot as soon as you open a hot water valve.
