Check with your local Electric supplier. They have units that run on off peak low rates and are almost free after the kickbacks they give you.
I went that route with an 80 gallon on off peak and have never ran out of hot water, even with a house full of company.
You would buy the unit right from the Electric company.
Just call them and ask about it.
It is way cheaper than natural gas or propane.
    Good luck.

Replace it with what you already have. You would have to be nuts to replace it with an electric heater for a variety of reasons. The biggest one being that electric heaters are terribly expensive to operate.
Tankless heaters have their problems also. They are expensive to install since any retrofit(that means anything other than a new building) is problematic. Their operating efficiency would probably be more than offset by the installation costs even over a long period of time.
By the way, 24 years of service from a water heater is excellent.

I was just in your situation .. only I thought ours went out ( from 1982) it was only the pilot light but we replaced it anyway. My good friend is a plumber and said that State brand was the best and it is best to have someone install it. I watched him install ours and he pulled out blow torches and all kinds of things and had to cut pipes. So my suggestion is to call a plumber out. We bought a State and of course my friend got it at his costs which was roughly $300 for a 50 gallon. I also asked him about the tankless and he said because there were only 3 of us there really was no need for the tankless for the costs and to switch over to electric will be costly. Stick with the gas but buy a more effiecient one and consider your family water use in the process.

It is probably at the end of its life expectancy. Tankless is the way to go since it’s the most energy efficient. But they cost more and there may be some installation issues. Electric recovers quicker since it has two heating elements; one at the top and one at the bottom. The least expensive would be replacing it with a new gas model.
