I can’t answer most of your questions, but wanted to relate my experience. I stayed in a cabin at the lake last year that had a tankless water heater. It worked great! I want to get one for my house, but have to wait until I can afford it.

Good for you to want to be more energy efficient. But be warned – those systems are expensive but will pay for themselves after awhile, especially for the electricity bill.
Do some research online and compare the different providers. There are not that many out there yet but maybe you can call the Better Business Bureau or the Chamber of Commerce of your town and they can help you out as well.
Good luck.
