I’m Thinking About Getting A Tankless Water Heater. What Is It Exactly And Is It Worth It? How Does It Work?

If you are talking about a wall-hung, on-demand water heater, then try www.rinnaina.com. We have been selling the Continuum water heater for about 3 years now, and they are great. You do need to have it installed by a certified installer though, or you void the warrantee. There are other units available as well such as the A.O. Smith Prostar (www.hotwater.com) and the Baxi Niagra (www.wallhungboilers.com). This type of heater works on flow of water. When you open a faucet, the flow through the heater trips a switch that turns the unit on to heat the water. Flow stops, unit shuts off. Very efficient, works only when needed, they save space, and are very fast & easy(usually) to install. The one drawback is that if your incoming water temperature is low (like here in Maine) you will not get the highest flow of hot water out because the unit has to work harder to make hot water. Usually not a big issue though. I would not use one if I were filling a hot tub/whirlpool on a regular basis either, although they can be installed in series to increase hot water production.
Good luck!

It just connects to your water line and is hot enough to simply heat the water as it passes through. So you don’t need a tank. I don’t know the costs though. I think most of them are electric but not sure.

It has electric or gas heaters surrounding a pipe. When you turn on the hot water, the heaters come on and heat the water as it goes through the pipe. It is a lot more expensive to buy and operate than a tank-type hot water heater of the same capacity.
Consumer Reports had a water heater article fairly recently. You might check your local public library for that.
