Is “american” A Good Brand Of Water Heater?

Our 8 year old gas 40 gallon water heater has not been reliably providing enough hot water lately and the repairman has been out a few times and is mystified. He offered to give us a brand new “American” 40 gallon water hater for $480 installed. Are these good water heaters?
A lot of people at work love their tankless water heaters, but I understand that I’d have to spend hundreds of bucks just to upgrade the gas lines to accomodate one of these.
Tank or tankless? American or another brand?

+ I still have GE but my buddy has a Westinghouse that he likes.
Gas or electrical? Drop by Lowes or Home Depot and check what they are selling and what they have for “sale” to get a better idea. Also what they sell the most of as that is probably the best answer.
GOOD LUCK

Just replace the damn thing with any 8 year guarantee model, all are about the same. He’s charging about $100 too much for a direct replacement. Tankless is good for new installation, you’ll never recoup the investment cost.
