I can tell you this…just over 2 months ago I just removed a 50 gal electric hotwater heater, and installed an electric tankless on demand hot water system. Mine only weighs 22lbs.. does our entire house.. which has 2 showers, two kitchens, 2 dishwashers. I paid $650 for this unit at home depot and after 2 months now Ive seen my electric bill drop $30 each month. There are five people in my house with 3 teenage boys. The only draw back was I needed 3 – 40 amp circuits in the panel box.. so far I am very happy.. Next is a couple of solar panels and the electricity bill will go down even more.. the plan is to eventually get off the grid.

Tankless is more expensive. Uses less space.
An electric tank costs more to operate. Uses more space.

If it were me, I would fix the gas leaks and go tankless gas. Your savings over electric will far out weigh the cost of heating your water electrically be it tank or tankless.
