yes it will cut your cost in half , save you water and pay for itself in a few years of using it

I saw some ratings in the consumer reports magazine and I wasn’t impressed. They said that those systems are costly and you just don’t get out of them what you put in. Problems with fluctuating water temperature..and a bunch of other things. I thought it might be a good idea in the past, but I think we’re probably better off with a regular water heater or a solar one (we’re in arizona), and yes, the solar ones are worth every peny here.
to the previous answerer: no they won’t save you money. They cost way more than a regular system and according to calculations it takes 22 years to break even (that’s a lot more than a “few” years). Not a good deal in my book.

There are variables that can be good or bad. If you have hard water, forget tank-less. The small tubing in them will clog quickly. Get a good brand. Rinnai is one that I never hear any bad things about. Initially, they are not cheap, but common sense will prove savings since the water is not being continuously heated. Make sure you get the proper size for your usage and an installer that also does any maintenance work that may be required. Many Plumbers will install them, but since they are “state of the art”, do not do repair work.

i agree with “virtue of”‘s answer…i’ll add…tankless water heater’s main benefit is not energy savings, although they do save some energy… as far as that goes,a typical gas water heater only costs about $25-$30 per month to run…even if the tankless saved 20% ,thats only $5-$6 per month savings….what tankless are good for is keeping up with a large demand for hot water that a standard,or even large, tank couldnt keep up with…also,if space is limited, tankless heaters are much smaller, usually mounted to a wall….also, they arent suppose to corrode and leak when they are older like a tank will, although what are the chances you will still be in that house long enough to see that benefit??…..tankless heaters cost 3-4 times what a tank costs if you inculde the extra work required for installation such as a much larger gas line or electric wire…..my advice is to stick with a standard tank heater [50 gal if it will fit] unless your circumstances require the tankless type………dan

That is a personal judgment call. Is it worth the extra money to buy a blu-ray player when you can still get dvd’s or to buy a coffee maker with more than the most basic features. It is your pie. How you slice it is up to you.
