My Water Heater Just Broke; What Should I Replace It With?

Posted on | December 13, 2009 | 6 Comments

I live in a trailer, and there are only two people that live here. We do not use water at the same time. So, I was looking at a tankless water heater that heats 1.5 gpm. There is another one that heats 131 gpm (I think it is a typo because it runs in 120). Which one would be efficient enough to do the job. Also, would this be a good way to go?
This would replace a gas heater.

Yep, that 131 is a typo if you look at the specs in the above link. I would call the AE3.4 a 1.0 Gallon per minute heater as it isn’t even rated at 1.5 and only has a temperature rise of 20F at 1 GPM. The AE7.2 says it is a 240V model and depending on the configuration (which heating elements are installed or enabled) may get up to 24F temperature rise at 2.0 GPM. If one of you are trying to wash dishes while the second person is taking a shower, I don’t think either of these are adequate.
The Paloma whole house tankless water heaters someone else mentioned (http://www.boschhotwater.com/HelpfulReso…
are more like 7.5 GPM but run closer to the $1000 mark. Home Depot sells them and there are some cheaper ones – you will have to dig in a bit deeper to make this decision. See also http://www.palomaindustries.com/pl/

The tankless water heater is a great way to go if you have the money to do it. It will save a lot of energy. Or you could just go with a 30 gallon gas water heater. That would be plenty of hot water for 2 people and is pretty inexpensive. Most trailers are set up for either a 30 or 40 gallon water heater with side outlets. So it would probably be a little easier to replace it with the same. and most 30 or 40 gallon water heaters come with a 6 year warrenty.

It depends on where you live. Did you notice that the ground temp rating is different for the 2. The first one is for where the ground temp may get below 60 degrees. The other one is for ground temp above 60.
Personally, I would go for the first one. Actually I am probably going to get one in the next couple of months and it will be the first one that I buy.

Being the fact that you livr in a trailer… YOU MUST get a TRAILER water heater…. yup they make them…. or else your insurance will nolonger be any good!!! this happened to me quite a long time ago but I had to replace it with a trailer home hot water heater…… I guess its the way they are vented and the way the water goes in to be heated…. But I would cheak into this first b-4 doing anything at all. Then make your mind up with what ones you have to choose from!!!
    Good Luck!!!

If u want to change to a tankless water heater, u have to pull a permit before u can install it. Cost- anywhere around $1,500. A 30 gal. for 2 people is plenty and u don’t have to move the plumbing around. Ur call. A 30 gal. w/h- now cost $400.-out the door. save on labor by DIY.

A company names Paloma (Spelling) sells a small tank-less gas water heater and it would be perfect for you. Ask at the stores or plumbing shops.
