The main cost saving feature on a tankless water heater is that it doesn’t operate until there is a call for hot water by opening up a faucet and starting water flow. There are applications however where a recirculating pump can be used. A recirculating pump just keeps the water sitting in the hot water lines from cooling down when hot water isn’t being used. It will still work on a tankless heater, especially if the heater is located in an area that’s a distance from your furthest sink or tub. The tankless heater will operate a little more as a result, but you will still have instantaneous hot water when you need it. A flow diagram is attached.
