Tankless Water Heater Reviews?
Posted on | December 8, 2009 | 5 Comments
I am curious to hear from people who ACTUALLY OWN a tankless water heater their thoughts on them. I have talked to several people that have heard things about them or know what they were like 25 years ago but I am interested in feedback from people who own them today. Please include the brand and or model which you won. Thanks A bunch!

My first experience with tank-less gas water heaters started 1 1/2 yrs ago when I built my new home. I had installed gas piping and a huge tank to run my back up generator and decided to run gas to the fire place and then decided to do the water heater . We have a RINNAI Tank-less water heater and it runs the shower, washer, dish washer, and the kitchen sink, all at the same time. Its unbelievable that such a small appliance on an outside wall can produce so much hot water, but it does.
I have tracked my gas useage pretty closely and I think it will pay for it self in about 5 yrs over the cost of a large electric water heater.
I believe the residential warranty is 5yrs
I’d do it again in a New York minute

I got a natural gas Bosch 1600P last weekend at Menard’s. This weekend I am returning it and getting a normal water heater with a tank.
Why? I live in a cold climate and my city water is from a river and something like 38 degrees coming in my house. Tank less only heat the water x degrees above the temperature of the water coming in. Now the Bosch will heat my water, but I have to restrict the flow to something like 1 GPM to get water around 120-125 degrees. I therefore have no flow. I increase the flow and the water gets cold. I decrease the flow and it takes years to fill a sink.
THERE IS NO SUPPORT FROM BOSCH! After several attempts to call them, I finally waited 50 minutes to get transferred to technical support. After an hour waiting there, I left a message by pressing one for a tech to call me back. It has been 2 days and no response.
If you live in a warmer climate or try a brand where you can actually set the temperature (not the whole flow/heat thing I have) you might have better luck. One of the solutions to my problem is to use a “holding tank” before the Bosch. If I had known that before, I would have disconnected the gas from my old heater and connected it to the Bosch to get the water to temperature.
Also note: we seem to use a lot more water with the tank less. You have to let the water run a bit before the hot is generated and fed to your faucet.

Above is a link to recent questions, and responses, as well as promotions for one type or another.
As one answer states brand names, I suspect those are not available globally? BUT certainly the initial cost, and method used are more pricey, but will pay for itself.
The only issue I have with them is Volume. IE: 2 showers, a dishwasher, and clothes washer all running at the same time, AND in that process, the recovery time. That obviously can be said of the tank type as well.
I certainly think the evolution of the appliance needed this.
That said, I’m also in favor of Solar. BUT… I live in Florida.

Before you purchase a tankless, domestic heater, you need to know that they all rate them differently as far as capacity goes. Standard tank heaters were always rated at a capacity tied to 100 degrees temperature increase. Tankless heaters will give you a variety of ranges – so before you think that a Rinnai giving you 4.8 GPM will be better than a Baxi giving you 2.3 GPM – check to see that they both are giving the same temperature rise – probably they’re not.
As an installer, I prefer Baxi, Rinnai, Takagi or the Cadillac of them all – Viessman
