The plumbing itself is in low hundreds. The problem may be, if it is the electrical kind, the typical tank-less water heater requires 4 to 5 times as much current as the regular tank kind. Therefore, you will need to have an electrician pull the new line. IF your feed from the power company and/or the main feed in your house is not sufficient, then you will have to deal with that too.

Same upgrade for gas…….typical house line may not be enough for the units.

you will also have to upgrade you gas meter provided by the gas company. the heater draws so much fuel that your standard meter wont work. a 3/4″ line will have to be run to the unit as well. to install you will need more than just a plumber. you will need the hvac man, electrician, and plumber. I would imagine that a retro-fit would run in the 1000 dollar range.

probably around 800 to 1000 dollars .. if you have a reputable company do it ….. don’t forget that plumbers are tying to make a living too
