What Size Natural Gas Line Is Required For A Tankless Water Heater For Three Bath Home?

Wow, it’s much more complicated than you think. 1. how many btu’s is the heater, 2. how far is the gas run at your house, whats the diameter of your gas main, how many gas appliances doe you already have and what are their btu ratings. Your much better off running “home run” to the on demand water heater. This should be done by a qualified plumber as natural gas can cause fire. A home run is a gas line just for the water heater its self. If you water heater is 200,000 btu’s it will be at least a 1″ gas line directly for the water heater, but this still depends on how far it is from your gas main. If your heater is less than 200,000 btu’s then your really in need of a qualified plumber/ installer because you are more than likely under sizing your hot water needs. Plumber 15yrs..

Minimum gas line size for most tankless water heater is 3/4 inch. If you are using a very small unit, then 1/2 inch would be enough, but for a 3 bathroom house would require a good sized unit so I wouldn’t go less than 3/4 inch. It should say in the installation manual.

1/2 line is all you need. you should run it in either black pipe or csst (corrugated stainless steel tubing)
