What Size Tankless Water Heater Do I Need?

Posted on | December 13, 2009 | 5 Comments

My husband and I need a new hot water heater and want to go tank less. I am looking online for the moment and can’t figure out what size we need. We have a 2 bathroom house with all the normal appliances, (washer dishwasher etc..). There are only 4 of us. My husband myself and our 2 small children. Can anybody give me some help figuring out what we need? Also any helpful info would be appreciated! Thanks!

We probably install 100 of these a year.
We recommend either the Noritz or Rinnai brands.
Go with a Noritz 751. If you live in a fairly warm area put in the outdoor unit. Otherwise use the indoor model and have it vented per the instructions.
You can check either web site or contact me thru my avatar.

In most cases  you cant just replace a standard water heater with a tank less  they vent differently  Also in my experience there are Also of complaints about not enough hot water to meet the demand at all times 4 example im in the shower and you turn the dishwasher on   For a cabin with one bathroom i think they are great I wouldn’t recommend a tank less for your home they are more trendy (green trendy ) than use full  your not your use of natural gas  will be relatively the same  But if you insist I would recommend calling a plumber gas and bi products of gas   are nothing to fool with

I got a Paloma 28R 199,000 BTU system. There’s 3 adults here. We have a large whirlpool tub in the master bath and a regular size tub in the other, with all other regular appliances like you. Our system probably cut our gas bill by a third or more, plus we qualified for the $300 energy tax credit on our income tax. We’ve never had a problem with running out of hot water, nor have I noticed any big difference in flow when more than one area is using water. I think you’ll be happy with it though the initial cost is pretty high. They do require a special stainless steel venting system which is around another $400 or so I believe. I opted to go with the outdoor model so I wouldn’t have to fool with that part of it. So far so good. I’ve had mine about a year and a half now.

We just put one in for a client. 2 adults; 2 teenage children. We had our plumbing supply house size it. It is a Noritz brand,
Model 0751-M 199,000 btuh input. I know little about them, but so far it works splendidly and my plumber said it was a relatively simple install. They do have some venting requirements which have to be adhered to, and a water softener was recommended for our area. I do understand, however, that if you’re running all kinds of appliances it’s not that the water cools down at the spigot, but that the flow is reduced.

get one a little larger than needed, also something to keep in mind is that if u are using hat water for the washer and the dishwasher is using hot water,u wont have enuf hot water for a shower,,no storage on these units, also the amount of hot water u get depends on the temp of the incoming water to the heater
