What Would A Plumber Charge To Install A Tankless Water Heater?
Posted on | February 21, 2010 | 3 Comments
In the first place this isn’t an easy job, installing a tank less water heater where there was an regular one. There’s a lot of pipe work involved. It’s not a simple “switch” like some seem to think.
I would go to Home Depot and get an estimate and see what they say. I know they’re going to be within the parameters.
If it’s new home installation then it’ll be easier, an older home, more detailed. Unless you very adept, don’t try it.
I don’t think any plumber can give you an estimate here, it would be to complicated.

Parts for the Rinnai wholesale for $1000. If the installer is placing the heater at the same location as the previous unit, your install labor cost may be between $600 and $1000. If you are placing the heater in a different location or converting from electric to gas, cost will go up.
Oregon has a pretty good program to reimburse the homeowner for installation, check your state to see if they offer rebates.
You may expect to recover the cost of install in five to seven years. During this time, you will NEVER run out of hot water.
To get a true quote, call three plumbing contractors or HVAC companies and ask for a quote. It is difficult to give a guesstimate without knowing many more details. If you can afford it, it is worth doing, provided your current water heater is truly needing replacement.

A plumber will charge you a heck of a lot more than the common hand tools necessary to do this simple switch out. It should take a beginner about 2 hours or so. Be sure to either sell the old water heater, or put it on freecycle, a yahoo group. Someone will surely want it.

About $300-$600 but the installer has to be certified to install your brand of heater, or you won’t be able to get the tax deduction from your government.
