Do you want electric, natural gas or LP. They come in several models and types. Are you going to install this yourself or have it done? How many people (showers) will this need to serve.
The ability of some smaller units to keep up is not as good as others. You first need to further define your needs and then buy the unit that will meet your needs. All units would make sense for a cottage because then you would not need to shut the water heater down when you are not present and it would be instantly ready to produce hot water upon your arrival. You would save the cost of heating water when you are not there but keep the connivance of instant use.
I have found the natural gas and LP models to be a bit better, but not enough for you to install LP if you don’t already have it. The size of the units has to do with their production rates. If you only have one bathroom then your demand will not be as great so a smaller unit should meet your needs.
Most installers like to supply their own (ones they sell) units so you may wish to take that into consideration.

If you can get LP to your cottage, I would go with Rinnai. There are eletric tankless water heaters that you can install at each fixture, ie the kitchen sink, the bath faucet and shower, if you have one. These units run are small and fit under the the cabinets. You can look into those, but that is only if your cottage is really low use.
