My tank type gas water heater does not use one. Is it really necessary?

A tankless water heater heats the water as it flows, and will produce condensation on the heat exchanger. This will not all evaporate and needs to be drained away from the combustion chamber for the unit to function correctly.

No….It is a safety feature. But ur tank type is required on code. But called a pressure regulator valve and a tube to safely drain the water.
